Right up til this date, Serbia remains the only country in history to have won the Eurovision Song Contest on their debut. Insane to think that’s already 9 years ago. About time Serbia has another go at the crown, and they are in with a very good chance this year; Time to meet Sanja Vučić from the band ZAA

The 22 year old from Kruševac, has been musically influenced by her parents since she was a child. As years went on, Sanja developed a strong adoration for soul music, quoting Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse and even Beyoncé as some of her influences. After moving to Belgrade, Serbia’s capital city, Sanja started performing with the band ZAA.

For Eurovision however, she’s temporarily leaving ZAA to show Europe the soul is very much alive and kicking within her. Her song, Goodbye (Shelter), originally written by the Serbian Pop composer and singer Ivana Peters, was internally selected and presented in March. Lyric wise, it’s a pretty tough nut to crack, dealing with the topic of domestic abuse, but the build up of the song in combination with Sanja’s voice and it’s unusual performance make this a very beautiful 3 minutes to watch and hear. A sure fire qualifier in the second semi final, we think.

Could history repeat itself? We most certainly wouldn’t mind, if it did.  Check out Serbia’s entry below:
