Electropop fans be ready. Azerbaijan are ready to bring the contest back to Baku, with one of their biggest pop stars; Dihaj.
DiHaj is the project fronted by singer-songwriter Diana Hajiyeva. The 27-year-old Baku Academy of Music and The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance graduate started the Dihaj project in 2014 when she released her first single I Break Again.
Since, she’s sporadically released new material, either in English or Azerbaijani. The band, are yet to release a full length studio album.
Hopefully that will change once Europe has experienced the band’s Eurovision entry this year, Skeletons, a collaboration between Azerbaijani and Swedish songwriters.
Let’s be honest here, since Azerbaijan won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011, the country’s efforts to win have whittled down. It’s been more quality over quantity. DiHaj’s sultry, dark electro pop, is however a different story; This has plenty potential to do very well.
Masters of staging
Like the Norwegian pop singer Margaret Berger in 2013, DiHaj has the edge to do extremely well. What plays in Azerbaijan’s favour however is their natural feel for staging. Judging from interviews with DiHaj, prior to the contest, this young lady has plenty of intriguing plans to come up with a fantastic staging.
If there is a dark horse, still to emerge. Keep an eye out for this one!
